So I have a job interview coming up from the University of New Hampshire! Yay!

They told me they'd prefer to interview me at the LSA conference, but would do a Skype interview if I couldn't make it to the LSA. So I spent a couple of days basically thinking about whether it would be worth, you know, $500 to travel across the country for the sake of a small improvement in my chances of making a good impression at a job interview. Eventually I decided that it was, and so last night I bought plane tickets (a 6am flight! boo!) and e-mailed UNH to tell them I'd be at the LSA after all. They said That's fine, but we've changed our minds and have decided to do all our interviews via Skype anyway.

So... I guess I'm going to the LSA now?

UPDATE: I'm not. Tickets are canceled; I decided I didn't want to deal with the 6am flight, and got my money back.

At least conferences tend to have benefits even if you're not presenting or anything. At the very least, you might be able to make more contacts in the case UNH doesn't pan out (although my experiences with UNH have always been good, so I hope you do get to work for them!).

eep. that sounds like no fun.

i've decided i'm not going, but i'll regret this decision if UConn honors me with an interview.

Can you cancel the tickets?

That's super obnoxious! I mean, yay interview, but seriously...

You generally have 24 hours after buying plane tickets to cancel them without a penalty.

I totally don't blame you!

I want to go to LSA one of these days, but it's obviously not going to happen this year!

That is pretty unfortunate. :(

Worst case, surely it's a good networking opportunity?

Oh! You could have visited Al!

...oh damn. I... was going to go, wasn't I? Only I'm not.

(I wonder what flight he used the last time he visited. It wasn't at 6 am. There was a connecting flight through Boston, though. He was excited about that.)

Yeah, I don't know. I suspect that going to the LSA this year would make me feel bad about myself, if that makes sense, and if really I just want to visit Al, well, there are probably better times of year for that.

(Yeah, true. We started planning a few months in advance at least. Which reminds me that we were going to start planning his next visit any time now.)

I might feel differently next year. Or not. Sometimes it just seems... well, you know. You've been there recently yourself.

Anyway! I have utterly missed the point thus far, which is: congratulations at getting all these interviews and shortlists! And good luck.
