Basement apartment

I like my apartment a great deal.

However, I do not like shoveling out of it on snow days.



The logistics leave something to be desired.

It had never previously occurred to me that frequent snow might be a reason to have doors open in instead of out.

The other day I had to get a car out of my parents' driveway. The process was less "shoveling snow" and more "pickaxing ice."

(let's be clear: taking a pickaxe to a two-inch-thick sheet of ice under snow is incredibly fun. Just, you know, semi-backbreaking)

Where do you... put the snow in these circumstances? You can't well put it behind you, and front and sides are blocked off.

Earlier this winter, when I went to buy an ice chipper, every place I tried was sold out of them.

From the bottom of the steps, I just kind of threw the snow further up the steps and hope most of it didn't slide right back down. Once I got further up myself, I was able to get it into the backyard (beyond the gate visible at the top of the steps in the picture).
