Surprised to learn, via the Baby Name Wizard blog, that last year was the first time 100 or more American babies were named "Noam". I've always thought of Noam as a not-too-rare name, and I've known at least three or four Noams. But I hang out with a lot of Jews and linguists.

Do you think the meteoric *cough* rise of Noam could be related to the current popularity of Liam? Or are the registers they're from sufficiently different that their phonotactic similarities are irrelevant?

Yeah, I think going to a JCC summer camp for 12 years has seriously skewed my sense of how common some names are.

The babies present at my friend Emily's potluck were named Lorelai and Solomon.

I think that at least some of the Noams I know were not born in this country, though moved here at a very young age, which skews the numbers.
