So, like, 10 or 12 years ago, I remember I had this hypothesis that the names of the Teletubbies—Dipsy, Tinky Winky, Laa-Laa, Po—seemed like they were probably inspired, consciously or subconsciously, by (a toddlerish pronunciation of?) the song "The Itsy-Bitsy, Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". I mentioned this to a few people and they thought my hypothesis was absurd, but it seems to me to be to close a match to be a coincidence.
I just found this old interview with Kenn Viselman, the American distributor of Teletubbies, in which he says that "The Itsy-Bitsy, Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" was his favorite song as a kid, and I thought my case was proven... until I realized that this guy was just the American distributor of a British show and presumably had no role in naming the characters.
I still think I'm right, though.
