Election campaign duration

Coincidentally, today is the date of the first televised debate in the runup to both the upcoming Canadian federal election and the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

The Canadian election is 74 days from today, making it the longest federal election campaign in Canadian history. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has faced some criticism for setting the start of the campaign so early.

The American election is 460 days from today.

Also, tangentially relatedly, the leaders of two of the three major parties in the Canadian parliament (the Liberals and NDP) represent adjacent districts in Montreal. That's kind of nifty.

Yeah . . . I'm on some political mailing lists, so I've been getting messages from candidates already. And I'm just like "No, I don't care yet, go away."
