Sadly, no resolution yet.... An unassembled one would cost twice as much and have to be assembled, but at least it would fit in my car. And I thought "find someone selling a bookcase on Craigslist" seemed like such a clever idea, too.
In fact, it happened twice. The shelves collapsed and I tried putting them back on their pegs and putting the books back on them anyway.... and then just as I was putting the very last book back on they collapsed again in the exact same way. It was very memorably Sisyphean.
Anyway, I found someone selling a used Billy bookcase on Craigslist; and I measured the dimensions of the trunk of my car (including, you know, that portal from the trunk that appears if you fold down the back seat) and convinced myself it would fit; and I talked Meredith, bless her, into driving out to Wynnewood with me to help me move the thing. So we carried the bookcase down from the third floor to my car, where we determined that the portal from the trunk is about an inch too small, and then carried it back up to the third floor again, in the second memorably Sisyphean talk associated with this process.

(2) Congratulations on the new car!
But, from the above comments, I would guess that neither of these points is relevant.
So, instead, perhaps plan B involves cinderblocks and planks?
